Cleanup follows Putnam high water

WINFIELD, W.Va. — A band of showers Sunday morning created high water in parts of Putnam County which rarely have issues.

“I think it was just a storm that hit the right place and hung in there a while,” said Putnam County Emergency Service Director Frank Chapman. “It produced a lot of heavy rain and we normally don’t see that much in one certain area.”

It was enough to flood places like Route 34 at Hurricane Reservoir, parts of Hurricane Creek Road, Route 817 at the John Amos Plant and even U.S. Route 60 between Hurrricane and St. Albans was covered in water for a brief time.

“Most all of the back country and secondary roads had high water for an hour or two until it went back down,” Chapman said.

Reports of damage were minimal to homes. Chapman said only one report was received of any structures being flooded.

The West Virginia Division of Highways worked to remove mud from the roadways and to clear a mudslide along Route 34 in parts of the county.
