Charleston woman identified in Elk River fatal

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Police have identified the woman killed Wednesday when her car plunged into the Elk River.

Peggy Jarrett, 80, of Charleston, was at the wheel of the vehicle which entered the water just off Westmoreland Drive and Pennsylvania Ave. in Charleston, police said. Jarrett sped through an intersection at a high rate of speed, crossed a parking lot, and went straight into the river without ever touching her brakes, investigators said.

The car, with her body inside, was finally recovered from the cold water after divers spent four hours searching for it Wednesday afternoon.

The investigation into the crash continues. Police gave no indication what might have caused the accident, but foul play has been ruled out.
