Charleston woman facing animal cruelty charges in hoarding deaths

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — About two dozen animals were found dead in a home on Charleston’s West Side Wednesday.

The owner of the Beech Avenue home, Mary Vores, is facing 24 counts of animal cruelty. Authorities found 16 dead cats, a dog, two fish, two hamsters in a rat dead inside the home.

Both a dog and a cat survived the ordeal and were taken away for medical treatment.

Police first received complaint of an odor coming from the home on Tuesday, and a search warrant on Wednesday revealed the dead animals, some of which were in makeshift caskets.

The cat remains in serious condition.
