Charleston to host several weekend events

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Another busy event weekend kicks off Friday night in Charleston.

The Charleston Town Center Mall will be hosting live music at the Court Street entrance from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. before the Moses Auto Group Live on the Levee gets underway at 6:30 p.m. at Haddad Riverfront Park along the Kanawha Boulevard.

“People can sort of just come hang out and enjoy the music as they’re coming and going,” said Charleston Deputy Mayor Rod Blackstone on Friday’s “580 Live” hosted by Charleston Mayor Danny Jones.

The Special Olympics are in town for its 11th year this weekend. Blackstone said they’ll be at Laidley Field and will make an appearance at Friday’s Live on the Levee.

“We’ll be having the opening ceremony when our community really just opens up its arms to the Special Olympic athletes in a big way,” he said.

Several other events this weekend include the West Virginia Pride Festival including a Saturday parade along the Boulevard and Symphony Sunday at the University of Charleston where a trolley connection will be available from the campus to the city’s West Side.

All city pools will be open this weekend, according to Charleston Parks Director John Charnock.

Also, the West Virginia High School Baseball Tournament continues at Appalachian Power Park. Four games are scheduled for Friday. The championship round is Saturday.
