Charleston residents recovering from Jonas

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Residents on Charleston’s East End are recovering from the more than 18 inches of snow Winter Storm Jonas dumped on to the Capital City this weekend.

The National Weather Service said the city received a total of 18.6 inches, making it a top three blizzard over any two-day period. It was the most snowfall in Charleston since the blizzard of 1996 that left behind 18.8 inches.

For some living on Virginia Street East, the dig out began Saturday before the storm ended that evening. Steven Adams said he wanted to get a head start on three of his cars blanketed by the snow.

“(It took) probably about a half an hour per car depending and it’s shaping up to be about a half hour to do the rest of the job today,” he said Sunday afternoon.

Kendall Moore was just a few doors down from Adams.

“I missed snow like this,” he said. “It brings me back to my childhood.”

Many others also enjoyed the snow including Carey Jo Grace.

“I love the snow, I just wish it was easier to dig out,” she said while taking a break from shoveling her car out on Bradford Street. “I think everybody was really well-prepared.”

Her weekend plans with her son included staying indoors, though.

“We’ve been binging on Netflix and reading,” Grace said. “The Internet didn’t go out, so that was a good thing too.”

There were very few power outages in Kanawha County compared to what could have been this weekend. Schools closed on Thursday, Friday and will remain closed Monday.

“My son has off school, so we’ll probably go sled riding again once we get the car out,” Grace said.

The Kanawha County Courthouse and its facilities will be open and operating Monday.

Slightly warmer temperatures are expected this week with plenty of sunshine in the forecast.
