Those taking part in Thursday’s service noted Hill’s large stature but a heart that was just as big in his efforts to help those he came in contact with.

Current members of the police department, including Hill’s son Jonathan, were in uniform during the ceremony.

The funeral processional went down Virginia Street underneath crossed ladders from the Charleston Fire Department at the Court Street intersection.

Hill was buried at Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens in Glasgow.
