Charleston possible snowfall totals vary

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Meteorologists with the National Weather are putting out word concerning a snowstorm expected to hit the Mountain State from Thursday night through Saturday afternoon.

Not all areas will get the same amount of snow, according to NWS Meteorologist Jonathan Wolfe.

“It really depends on where the track of this low pressure system goes,” he said. “If it goes more to the east it will keep the warm air away from us (resulting in more snow).”

The NWS Charleston office tweeted a snowfall map of best and worst case scenarios Tuesday. Calling the map “Confidence in Major Snowstorm.”

The storm could be a tough call for meteorologists, Wolfe said.

“It definitely has the potential to be a major winter storm. The areas that get hit hardest? Definitely the (eastern) mountains will get hit, but once you get down to the valleys we are a little more unsure,” Wolfe said.

Predictions range from 2-4 in the lowlands but up to a foot of snow if the warm air stays east. It appears the mountain counties are more of a sure bet, Wolfe said.

“They are getting hammered. There’s a pretty high probability of getting up to two feet of snow,” he said.

North central counties could get a foot or more of snow out of the late week storm.

An initial storm, expected to leave behind a few inches of snow, is in the forecast for Wednesday afternoon.
