Charleston police release statistics on checkpoints

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Over the last four weeks of conducting sobriety and child safety seat checkpoints, the Charleston Police Department issued more than 200 citations and made five arrests for driving under the influence.

The police department released its numbers on Thursday, in which 4,030 vehicles went through checkpoints. Nineteen field sobriety checks were conducted, 214 citations were issued, multiple child safety seats were checked and one firearm was seized.

Officers also seized illegal drugs, including crystal meth and marijuana. Authorities said needles used for illegal drug use were found, adding at least one person said their needles came from the needle exchange program, although the police department did not clarify whether it was the program of the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department or that of HealthRight.

Other arrests include prohibited from possessing a firearm, driving with a revoked license, possession of drugs and fraudulent motor vehicle identification.
