Charleston police officer charged with domestic battery

WINFIELD, W.Va. — A Charleston police officer, already on probation for a deadly car wreck, has been charged with domestic battery.

CPD Officer Stephen Doss is already on probation in connection with a deadly car wreck.

Officer Stephen Doss was charged Monday, according to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident happened Saturday at a home in Eleanor. Deputies said Doss was drunk when he slapped his wife and scratched her face during an argument.

Doss was arrested Monday and posted a $5,000 property bond.

Last month, Doss was sentenced to one year of probation and 10 days of community service in connection with a fatal car accident in Charleston. Doss pleaded guilty to failing to use his lights and sirens when he crashed into an elderly woman’s car near the intersection of Washington Street and Maryland Avenue. It happened in January 2017 when he was responding to a call. The woman died later than month.

Doss was originally charged with negligent homicide, an authorized emergency vehicle violation and speeding.

He has been on administrative leave since the crash.
