Charleston man pleads guilty to misdemeanor charge in 2015 shooting death

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Charleston man pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter Wednesday for the death of a woman in November 2015.

Matthew Roohollahi, 31, was arrested and indicted on first-degree murder charges in January 2017 in connection to the shooting and killing 22-year-old Andrena Smith, who was dating Roohollahi’s uncle at the time.

Kanawha County Assistant Prosecutor Maryclaire Akers said Jonathan Bush fired shots at the Roohollahi’s home on Lakin Street the evening before Smith’s death.

“He was in a domestic relationship with Matt Roohollahi’s sister, and the sister had left him and was living at that house,” Akers said.

According to Akers, a police report was filed the next day on the shooting.

Bush came back to the home that evening and fired shots at the house.

Roohollahi, who Akers said had been drinking prior to the shooting, waited at the top of the stairs inside the house with a rifle following Bush’s second appearance.

Smith and Roohollahi’s uncle came to the residence after the shooting to see if Roohollahi and his sister were safe.

“Without waiting to see who was on the other side of the door, he shot through the door and killed Andrena Smith,” Akers said.

Akers said the law limits Roohollahi’s charge and punishment, which is a one-year sentence for the misdemeanor. Roohollahi served the sentence already as part of 18 months in jail and under home confinement.

According to Akers, Bush will be sentenced in June. He has been charged with several counts of wanton endangerment.
