Charleston man pleads guilty in connection to New Year’s Eve murder

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A man pleaded guilty Monday in connection to the shooting death of a teenager last New Year’s Eve.

Christopher Burton, 28, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder with a firearm.

J’Shaad Jones, 18, of Charleston, was shot and killed Dec. 31, 2015 outside the Kickback Lounge on the city’s West Side.

Burton also pleaded guilty Monday to a second offense recidivist charge. Prosecutors said that is part of the state’s law that means a person can be sentenced to life after three felony convictions.

Burton will be sentenced Dec. 20 in front of Kanawha County Circuit Judge Joanna Tabit. He faces 15-45 years behind bars.

A second defendant, Marlon Rush, 38, is facing a first degree murder charge in connection to Jones’ death. A trial for Rush was supposed to begin Monday, but instead will be rescheduled.
