Charleston hosting 2nd ‘Team Up to Clean Up’ on Saturday

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Residents of Charleston will take part in a city-wide cleanup on Saturday in the second event of its kind this year.

The “Team Up to Clean Up” will consist of groups taking part in cleaning up various neighborhoods in the Capital City. The event comes after the city’s April series of cleaning events, in which volunteers collected 42 tons of trash over four weekends.

“During the campaign and over this past year as I go door to door, one of the number one things people tell me is please help us clean up this city. It’s been a long time coming,” Charleston Mayor Amy Goodwin said.

Goodwin added the events in the spring re-energized the city.

“People would call and ask where they could buy extra recycling bars or where they could buy the litter picker-uppers. It kind of started a fire,” she said.

The cleanup is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. People can meet at the North Charleston Community Center (2009 7th Ave.), City National Bank (3601 MacCorkle Ave. SE), or Haddad Riverfront Park (Kanawha Boulevard East).
