Charleston garbage pick-up crews wrap up in Clendenin

CLENDENIN, W.Va. — Charleston Public Works Director Gary Taylor says city garbage pick-up crews may return to Clendenin for one more day in the future but his department has for the most part returned to its normal work schedule.

Charleston crews spent eight days in the flooded out area helping Clendenin with debris removal, Taylor said.

“The big deal for me is my employees up there. They are the ones that really need to get the praise,” Taylor said Wednesday on 580-Live with Charleston Mayor Danny Jones. “Those guys went up there and adopted that city and really treated it as if it were their own.”

Charleston has joined a number of municipalities and state agencies to get tons of flooded debris out of the area, Taylor said.

“I’m really impressed with all of the volunteers and the different city workers up there and the National Guard,” he said.

Taylor said he’s optimistic a lot of Clendenin residents will try and stay in the community.

“You see people working on houses. I think a lot of them are waiting to see what different agencies, like FEMA, will do for them. I think a lot of people will move back in up there,” Taylor said.

Charleston City Council voted Monday night to give Clendenin a dump truck to help with recovery efforts.
