Charleston CVB hosts inaugural litter clean up along Kanawha River

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Volunteers with the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau were on the bank of the Kanawha River Thursday morning to clean up trash.

The work took place in Charleston from the Southside Bridge to Magic Island.cvb

Katy White, of Charleston, was one of the volunteers that saw a need for a litter clean up event.

“I walk on the river every day with my dog and it’s like my front yard. You don’t want a front yard to be dirty,” she said.

About 30 people collected bottles, cans, trash, clothes and other items.

“Within about 40 minutes, we had about 15 bags of trash,” said Susie Salisbury with the Charleston Area Alliance.

White said she saw how little time city workers had to pick up little pieces of trash, which is why she brought the idea to the CVB.

“There’s just been a lot of people that agreed we could do a better job. We wanted to time the first one right before the Live on the Levee event,” she said.

This is about “having pride in our city,” White said.

“This is a gorgeous city and you want to keep it clean, right?” she said.

Volunteers from downtown businesses, citizen groups and the community all participated in Thursday’s event.
