Charleston Council approves bond to continue upgrading sewer system

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Charleston City Council approved a bond at its Tuesday night meeting to continue upgrading the city sewer system.

The $18 million project will focus on the Porter’s Branch area of Charleston.

“This is one of the steps in our plan to revitalize our system,” said Kanawha Sanitary Board GM Larry Roller. “(To) repair and replace decaying pipelines.”

Roller said that the KSB had already replaced Kanawha Two Mile, Twilight Drive and Ruffner Avenue areas of Charleston.

“This is part of our Capital improvement plan, which is part of our long-term control plan, which is mandated by the (state) DEP and federal EPA,” Roller explained.

South Charleston and Belle are also in the process of upgrading sewer systems to comply with EPA regulations, causing a potential rise in rates.

A raise in sanitary board rates in Charleston will go into effect at the end of March, Roller said.

A public hearing on the project will take place March 7.
