Charleston City Council OKs tennis court repairs

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Charleston City Council approved of a resolution Monday to authorize city officials to enter a deal related to repair work at the Schoenbaum Tennis Courts.

Mayor Danny Jones or City Manager David Molgaard will be allowed to sign an agreement with Dunbar-based WV Paving for $835,590 to pay for drainage work at the Kanawha County sports facility. Some of the work includes removing fencing, installing drainage pipes and removing pavement.

Molgaard said the work is needed because of flooding issues.

“As I understand it, the way that ground lays over there, it creates an underground pool,” he explained. “It’s below the existing creek level that’s behind there, and the water can’t escape. It’s weeping up through the asphalt and pavement.”

Molgaard said across multiple bids and further testing, the scope of the project was finalized.

“There going to have to put in special drainage system to take care of that situation,” he added.

There is no timetable for when the project will begin or be completed.
