Carper hopes to hear response soon on Yeager slide claims

CHARLESTON, W.Va.–Kanawha County Commission President Kent Carper said last week possible settlements with victims of the Yeager Airport landslide could be resolved soon.

He said the process, which has gone on “way too long”, was close to being settled.

“I hope we’ll get an answer from them very early next week,” Carper said. “The blameless here, which are the people who live in that area, need to be wholed.”

He said that a disaster like the slide should really be settled quicker by insurance companies.

“When you have a catastrophic failure like that, and destroys a church, that church shouldn’t have to wait one day longer to be made whole,” he said. “And also people that live there. People have lost their homes, they’ve lost the value of their homes, they need to be made whole.”

Unfortuately, Carper said, the circumstances have made it a slower process than was expected.

“There’s a lot of players, a lot of companies, a lot of carriers, different agreements between the parties. It’s somewhat unsual the way we’ve insisted on proceeeding, because we wanted to get these people paid.”

The county commission will likely update the progress of the claims involved with the Yeager slide at its meeting on Tuesday.
