Carper: Better Democrat turnout so far in Kanawha early voting

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Early voting has been underway in Kanawha County for nearly a week, and county commission President Kent Carper said so far turnout has been respectable but not overwhelming.

“Not what some people thought it would be so far,” Carper said on MetroNews “Talkline” Monday. “The Democrats are outvoting Republicans in Kanawha County not by a huge amount but by a little bit.”

Carper said far more Democrats had voted in 2008, by about 20 percent. President Obama still lost West Virginia despite the large turnout. He described the statistics thus far.

“We’ve had about 2,462 votes so far, about 196 a day,” he said. “Basically Democrats are outvoting Republicans by about 25 percent.”

Early voting in Kanawha County runs through Saturday, with the primary election held on May 10.
