CROSS LANES, W.Va. — A car bypassed two mothers and their children at a school bus stop in Cross Lanes last week.
It happened Thursday afternoon as students from Point Harmony Elementary crossed the road in front of a stopped school bus that was yielding to pedestrians along Route 622.
The car came through the double-lined center lane and drove passed the bus, almost hitting the parents and children.
“One child was petrified. They stood there for a second until the parent got them by the hand. The other one was crying, according to what I could hear on the bus from the students,” said Brette Fraley, the transportation director for Kanawha County Schools.
Fraley said no one was hurt. He said the driver of the vehicle has not been identified. The reason behind why the driver was speeding passed the bus is also unknown.
Currently, Fraley said the transportation office is trying to spread awareness about bus stop safety for all students and parents in Kanawha County.
“Beware that when you’re at the bus stop, you’re in a school zone,” he said. “Everybody doesn’t obey the law. It’s unfortunate.”
“You just can’t take safety for granted. You have to be aware of it and you have to do your part. Everybody has a responsibility to get the kids in and out of school.”
