CAMPBELL’S CREEK, W.Va. — A Kanawha County man shot and killed his mother, who had cancer, and then turned the gun on himself, Kanawha County sheriff’s deputies said Saturday.

The bodies of Kathy Blount, 61, and Jason Blount, 31, were found Saturday afternoon in the Spring Fork area of Campbell’s Creek, according to department spokesman Sgt. Brian Humphreys.

“The vehicle was found and a short distance from the vehicle their bodies were found,” Humphreys said. “Both victims of a murder-suicide. It looks like he killed his mother and then killed himself with a handgun.”

The department put out information earlier Saturday that it was looking for the pair and Kathy Blount’s car. She was last seen at her Campbell’s Creek home Friday morning. Her son was the last person known to be with her and he left her residence in her car Friday afternoon, deputies said.

Kathy Blount was recently diagnosed with cancer and according to deputies her son has said he would put her out of her misery.

“I understand he had some mental health issues of his own and I think he was also genuinely concerned about his mother’s health as well,” Humphreys said.

Deputies said Jason Blount has had a history of drug abuse.
