Boone County man pleads guilty to taking drugs from packages

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Boone County man admitted Thursday to taking drugs from packages for months before he was caught.

Roger Dane Adkins, 45, of Morrisvale, entered a guilty plea to obtaining hydromorphone and fentanyl between 2016 and March 2017. Adkins previously worked as a package delivery driver and visited several Kanawha County pharmacies on his route.

A hospital pharmacist told authorities in March 2017 about controlled substances that had been removed from packages. The Charleston Police Department and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration identified several pharmacies that had reported a loss of substances.

Adkins picked up a dummy package on March 22, 2017. When investigators approached the vehicle, they found him opening the parcel. He later admitted after removing some of the drugs, he would reseal and send the boxes to its intended destination.

Adkins’ sentencing date is scheduled for April 25. He faces up to four years in federal prison.
