Alliance spokesperson addresses Charleston housing shortage

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A housing study has been released by Charleston Area Alliance dealing with a housing shortage in downtown Charleston.

“We have the entire study posted on our website,” said Alliance Spokesperson Susie Salisbury. “It is available for the general public or any potential housing developer to access. We’ve distrubuted it to a variety of housing developers as well.”

Salisbury said many people call the Alliance wanting housing in downtown Charleston, and the study confirmed that more people want apartments than there’s room for.

“The national average of 97 percent is an indication of a housing shortage,” she explained. “Our downtown is at 100 percent and our city at a whole is at 99.7 percent. And that’s decent apartment living.”

The study showed there is property available for 600 units to be developed in the downtown area with a demand of 450 units.

The study was done by Bowen National Research.
