Air conditioning projects continue in Kanawha schools as year kicks off

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Maintenance crews with Kanawha County Schools are still working to repair air conditioning units as the school year gets started.

Several projects have been completed, but more work needs to be done. The first day of school in Kanawha County was Monday.

Briana Warner, communications director for KCS, said the warm temperatures we can expect this week are concerning. Several schools closed for a few days last year due to no A.C. in classrooms.

“We know that children need to be comfortable and teachers need to be comfortable in order to get through the day, in order to work, in order to learn, so that’s why the maintenance department is working as quickly as possible to address any and all of these temperature concerns across the county,” Warner said.

Malden Elementary has a new roof top unit, Pratt Elementary has a new compressor, Elk Elementary Center has a new condenser, Riverside High School has a new replacement unit for their academic wing.

“The good news is just in the last three weeks maintenance has been able to accomplish several replacements,” Warner said.

A lot of temporary fixes have also been installed.

“Pinch Elementary has some spot chillers, Shoals Elementary has some window units that have been installed, Cross Lanes Elementary has a rental chiller in place while they wait on these larger repairs to be made,” Warner said.

Kanawha is one of the first counties in West Virginia to start the 2017-2018 school year.

The A.C. work will continue over the next few weeks.
