CHARLESTON, W.Va. — For some it seems like summer was just a blink of an eye in Kanawha County. Following a previous school year that was stretched by snow days, students return to Kanawha County schools Monday for the first day of classes.
Maintenance and construction crews worked through the weekend to get schools ready. It’s been a marathon session at Nitro Elementary School where a construction project wasn’t completed going into the weekend. Students will begin the year getting around that work.
Students living along Keystone and Barlow drives still won’t be able to catch the school bus in front of their homes because of the Yeager Airport overrun area collapse. Instead, the pick-up spot for most students will be the intersection of Keystone Drive and Airport Road.
Kanawha County is one of four counties in the state that are part of a pilot program that has longer than normal safety arms on school buses. Ten buses will have the extended stop arms to begin the school year.
At least 10 additional Kanawha County sheriff’s deputies will be patrolling in school zones during the next few days. Chief Deputy Mike Rutherford said it’s the annual attempt to remind motorists that school is back in session.
