Kanawha County school nurse recognized by state BOE

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Board of Education honored Janet Allio at its monthly meeting Wednesday, giving her the first ever 2015 Excellence in School Nursing Award.

Allio has served over 19 years as a school nurse in Kanawha County. She is currently the nurse at Mary C. Snow West Side Elementary School and at Piedmont Elementary.

Many students at the schools live in crime ridden parts of Charleston where they often witness violence. Allio partnered with Charleston Police to develop and implement the Handle With Care Program, which allows police to notify schools if a student witnesses a traumatic event.

U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin has said Allio has “substantially contributed to the program.”

Allio received the recognition of the 2015 School Nurse of the Year during the West Virginia Association of School Nurses Fall Conference at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs.

She will receive $1,500 to use for professional development or school programs as well as a custom-made award.
