580-WCHS listeners come through for St. Jude

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Listeners to five West Virginia radio stations in Charleston gave approximately $200,000 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital during the annual radiothon that wrapped up Friday evening.

It marked the 12th straight year the stations have hosted the two-day event. St. Jude representative Dan Warble said 580-WCHS, V-100, 98.7 The Beat, 96.1 KWS Superstar Country and Tailgate have loyal listeners.

“It’s amazing for a community this size that five stations come together–touch this community and we raise $200,000,” Warble said.

The money will go straight to the Memphis, Tenn-based hospital that focuses on curing childhood cancer.

“Most people now use credit cards and so in seven days that money will be at work at St. Jude, curing kids. That money makes no stops it goes straight to the hospital,” Warble said.

The last year has been a tough one in the Kanawha Valley with the economy and the devastating June 23 flood but Warble said there were some amazing examples of giving Thursday and Friday.

“Every time something happens it touches your heart when you see someone this generous,” he said. “They don’t know this kid and they probably don’t even know anybody that deals with childhood cancer, but they know these kids are in trouble and they want to help.”

There are currently 27 West Virginia residents receiving treatment at St. Jude. The hospital shares its research findings with other children’s hospitals across the country.
