CHARLESTON, W.Va – A Kanawha County man accused of first-degree murder will not go on trial as scheduled later this month.
Kanawha County Circuit Judge Maryclaire Akers granted the prosecution a continuance in the case of Jacob Fields, the 19-year-old who allegedly shot and killed 42-year-old Tiffany Adkins as she walked out of the Sheetz convenience store in Kanawha City last year.
Assistant prosecuting attorney Madison Tuck moved for the continuance on the grounds that two key witnesses, a detective involved in the investigation and the doctor who performed Adkins’ autopsy, would not be available on the original trial date, January 26.
Fields’ attorney Robbie Long did not object to the motion, and the trial is rescheduled for February 23.
In the same hearing, Long moved for bail to be set for Fields, arguing his client is not a flight risk and that the state’s case was not strong enough to convict him of first-degree murder. In response, Tuck displayed photo and video evidence that she said indicated Fields was knowledgeable about guns and fantasized about killing someone, describing Adkins’ murder as a “thrill kill.”
Following the presentation of evidence, Judge Akers chose not to allow bail to be set.
