CHARLESTON, W.Va. — City council is expected to give approval Monday night for an additional $800,000 to go to the city’s CARE team.

“For good reason we’re doing that,” Charleston Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin said Monday on 580Live with Dave Allen. “To make sure the CARE team is funded.”

CARE, which stands for Coordinated Addiction Response Effort, continues to deal with overdose victims and others struggling with drug addiction.

The $800,000 will come from the city’s opioid settlement funds.

Goodwin said CARE has helped put 2,000 people into custody since its creation.

The team is meeting the needs of the community, Goodwin said.

“That’s what municipal government is doing right now,” she said. “We’re doing the heavy-lifting and the very, very hard work of this opioid crisis and, quite frankly, this mental health crisis.”

City council’s finance committee meets at 6:30 p.m. Monday with he full council at 7 p.m.

Land Reuse Agency meeting

The Charleston Land Reuse Agency (CLRA) will host a public meeting Tuesday evening to update residents on its work.

“The Land Reuse Agency has three programs that we’re going to talk about just in a quick presentation; our homeowner’s property renovation fund, our rehabilitation of vacant houses and our side lot program,” Goodwin said.

Goodwin said she wants to hear from residents at Tuesday evening’s meeting.

“We have so many community meetings because we should,” Goodwin said.

CLRA launched the three programs last year.

“This event is about sharing the successes that are happening in Charleston to recycle abandoned and vacant property, but even more, it is about hearing what residents and neighbors think is working and what they think is not,” said John Butterworth, Senior Planner for the CLRA. “The CLRA is trying to listen to residents, take what we learn, and put together solutions that will make our neighborhoods stronger. We need advice on how we can continue to achieve that.”

The meeting is set for Tuesday evening from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Element Edge, which is located at 1611 4th Avenue.
