CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Kanawha County School Board has approved a property agreement with the state Division of Highways that will allow the DOH to replace the School Street Bridge in Charleston adjacent to
Chandler Academy.

Kanawha County Schools Director of Facilities Andrew Crawford said the bridge hasn’t been structurally sound for several years and county school buses have had to reach Chandler through an alternate route.

“The DOH approached us,” Crawford said. “This will allow our buses to travel across the bridge and fire trucks to travel across the bridge.”

Crawford told the county school board at last week’s meeting that the new bridge will take part of the entry at Chandler. He said 10 parking spaces will have to be moved behind the building where the basketball court is located.

“We’re going to stripe the basketball court (for parking spaces) so when they need parking for testing days they’ll end up using the basketball court temporarily,” Crawford said.

The BOE to sell a 2,681 square ft. parcel to the WVDOH for $8,500.00, along with the granting of a temporary construction easement for an additional 2,530 square ft.

Chandler Academy is the school system’s alternative school.
