CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A 55-year-old coal miner died in a Wednesday morning accident in Boone County.
“I’m deeply saddened to hear about the death of one of our brave coal miners, Steven Fields,” Gov. Patrick Morrisey said in a statement. “Steven tragically passed away after an accident at the Progress Surface Mine in Twilight, WV. All West Virginians should keep Steven’s family and loved ones in our prayers.”
Fields lived in Chauncey.
“Our miners are some of the hardest-working, humble, and courageous people in our state,” Morrisey said “They are truly the backbone of West Virginia. We’re deeply indebted to these brave men and women and continue to pray for their safety.”
Federal and state mine safety investigations are underway.
