CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Charleston Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin has officially proclaimed January 24, 2025, as Maddox “MadDog” Potter Day in the City of Charleston.
Maddox Potter, a 16-year-old student at George Washington High School, passed away Friday after battling cancer since December 2023.
Potter recently made the decision to halt chemotherapy treatments once coming to the understanding of how limited treatment options were.
In a Facebook post, Potter’s mother, Jennifer Potter, wrote, “This is not giving up. This is him choosing to spend his remaining time at his home, surrounded by a family and a community that loves him dearly. We should all be so brave and wise.”
Charleston Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin, in a statement, said Potter is a source of inspiration for the community.
“Today, we come together as a community to honor the life and legacy of Maddox Potter, a remarkable young man who faced unimaginable challenges with courage, grace and an unwavering spirit. He was not only a beloved resident of our community but also a source of inspiration to everyone who knew him. His love for life and his family, and his ability to bring hope to others, even in the face of adversity, is a reminder of the power of resilience. I am honored to proclaim today Maddox ‘MadDog’ Potter Day, so that we may celebrate his memory and the lasting impression he has left on our hearts,” Goodwin said. “My thoughts are with Maddox’s family during this time, and I stand with them in honoring his incredible life and legacy.”
Potter ran cross country for John Adams Middle School before high school and was also a large fan of golf. He spent time on the George Washington golf team.
Schools across Kanawha County wore yellow and gold Friday, the colors representing the ribbon for childhood cancer.
