Two people have been arrested after a Sunday police chase in Clay County saw a vehicle go into the Elk River.
Police say Jonathan C. Sparks, 26, of Montgomery and Tiffany Nicole Bragg, 34, of Richwood, were arrested Sunday evening along Route 16.
The chase began around 7:45 Sunday evening. During the chase, the vehicle Sparks and Bragg were traveling in passed multiple vehicles in no-pass zones, took blind turns in the opposite lane, and traveled through the town of Clay at double the posted speed limit.
Troopers say the vehicle braked aggressively four miles north of the Route 16/Route 4 intersection, which caused it to make contact with another police cruiser. The vehicle then slid off the roadway over a 30-foot embankment into the Elk River.
Troopers also say when contact was made with Sparks and Boggs, the two refused to comply. According to the criminal complaint, a pistol was thrown from a window of the vehicle and later recovered.
Sparks and Boggs, who each had outstanding warrants in other counties, were eventually taken into custody where they were then taken to a local hospital for treatment. The pair were then taken to jail.
Sparks has been charged with felony fleeing, two counts of destruction of property and three counts of obstructing an officer, while Bragg has been charged with two counts of obstructing an officer.
Sparks is being held on a $11,500 cash only bond. Bragg is being held on a $2,000 cash only bond.
