CHARLESTON, W.Va.— The Girl Scout cookie season has officially kicked off across the region.
The 2025 cookie lineup includes all of the classic flavors, such as Thin Mints, Tagalongs, Samoas, and more. The lineup will also have a beloved fan favorite, S’mores, however this year will be the last time to buy them, since they are retiring the flavor. But fans can anticipate a new flavor to come out next year.
Joelle Gates, from the Black Diamond Council, was on 580 Live with Dave Allen Friday morning and she says that there are different ways to purchase the cookies.
“The best way is to contact a Girl Scout that you know or love, but if you may not know someone and still wish to participate in the sale, follow Black Diamond Council Facebook page, there we share information on how to order online, text to get a direct link and also contact the council and we’ll get you set up,” Gates said.
Cookies are sold for $6 a box and Gates said that they will sale the cookies until they run out, sometime in March or April. All proceeds made from the cookie sales will remain local, with 55% of the proceeds going towards council-sponsored programming and events, 21% goes to Girl Scouts Leadership Experience, and 24% going towards Girl Scout cookie related costs and delivery fees.
And while the girls sell the cookies for fun, Gates said that it also teaches them valuable lessons they can use in the future.
“We honestly think the Girl Scout cookie program is the most beneficial things that girls can participate in her youth,” she said. “It’s a way for girls to gain valuable entrepreneurial skills that will set them up for success their entire lives.”
She says that these skills include goal setting, money management, decision-making, people skills, and business ethics.
And while the cookie selling program is a huge thing for the organization and the girls involved, Gates said that the organization itself has evolved.
“Those core aspects that we’ve had over 100 years ago, they’re still with us,” she said. “But, also at Girl Scouts we also really try to our finger on the pulse of what girls are experiencing.”
She said that after the pandemic, especially, is when they began expanding their programs further.
“When Girl Scouts are now doing community service projects, we’re seeing their focusing on mental health and how they can help boost mental wellness in their communities,” Gates said. “Of course, we have girls participating in amazing things such as helping out their local animal shelter or giving back to local veterans.”
