CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Those associated with brining the high school football championships back to Laidley Field who now do a self-evaluation.

Organizers said they were generally pleased with all things went but there were also things learned that will be improved for next year.

The four championship games drew large, enthusiastic crowds. The AAA championship between Herbert Hoover and Bridgeport drew the largest crowd.

Many came away from the weekend impressed with the improvements made to Laidley Field. Kanawha County School Superintendent Tom Williams said he’s pleased with the work.

“There was some work that needed to be done because stuff hadn’t been done for a long time,” Williams said.

The work and projects include a new video board, renovated press box, some fresh paint, pressure washing, new bathrooms and rails leading up the steps in the stands.

Williams said Kanawha County Schools was pleased to work with the City of Charleston and the committee that presented the Charleston bid to help make the event happen.

Williams said it’s the best Laidley Field has looked “for a long, long time.”

“I especially like the steps that are painted gold when you go up. Everything is pristine and perfect,” Williams said.

By next year’s championships there may LED lights and an elevator to the press box.
