CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Charleston Police Department swore in 11 new officers Monday morning.

The 11 new police officers makes it the largest class the CPD has seen since 2005.

In a statement, Charleston Chief of Police Scott Dempsey said this was a special day for the department.

“It is truly an exciting day for the Charleston Police Department to swear in 11 new team members to our CPD family. I am proud to see so many men and women join our force and see our roster numbers rise,” Dempsey said. “We always strive to be the best law enforcement agency in the State of West Virginia. To attract this large hiring class will certainly serve the citizens of Charleston well.”

Charleston Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin said the largest class since 2005 shows the city’s dedication to the safety of the public.

“We are thrilled to welcome the largest class of new officers in nearly 20 years to the Charleston Police Department, a milestone that reflects our City’s unwavering commitment to public safety, and the success of the Department’s robust recruitment efforts,” Goodwin said. “I look forward to getting to know our new officers and seeing the fresh perspectives and energy they will bring to our community.”

The new officers will begin their training with the Charleston Police Department Training Division Tuesday before they enter a 15-week law enforcement training stint with the West Virginia State Police Academy.
