PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va.—— A woman was sentenced Thursday morning in Putnam County Court to three to 15 years for the death of her two-year-old son.
Megan Kincaid, was indicted in July on child neglect resulting in death and child neglect resulting in serious bodily injury. In October, she plead guilty to child neglect resulting in death. She will also have to register to be part of the child abuse registry for a decade.
Prosecutors said that Kincaid had left the toddler at the house alone while she took an older child to the bus stop. When she returned home, she began smoking and playing games on her phone.
She fell asleep and the fire, which appeared to have started in the den woke her up. Kincaid was rescued by firefighters in the garage, but her son was not with her. The baby was later located and died of smoke inhalation at the hospital, where it was also discovered that he had meth in his system.
