WINFIELD, W.Va. — A Putnam County woman faces 3 to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty Thursday to charges connected to her young son’s death

Megan Kincaid admitted to child neglect resulting in the Nov. 10, 2022 fire related death of her two-year-old son at a house in Eleanor.

Prosecutors said Kincaid had taken an older child to the bus stop on the morning of the fire. She had left the toddler at the house. When she got back she began smoking and playing games on her phone. The fire, which appears to have started in the den, woke her up.

Firefighters rescued Kincaid in the garage of the residence but the 2-year-old wasn’t with her. He later died of smoke inhalation. He had meth in his system.

Kincaid told the court she fell asleep in the garage.

“If I wasn’t an addict I would’ve been more of a parent,” Kincaid told the judge Thursday, according to WCHS-TV.

Part of the plea bargain agreement with prosecutors requires Kincaid to be part of the child abuse registry for a decade.

She’ll be sentenced Dec. 12.
