The Mothman Festival is back, drawing thousands of visitors from all over the world to gather on Main Street in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, to celebrate the legendary creature that has captivated imaginations since the infamous 1966 sighting.
The annual event, held every third weekend in September, honors the red eyed, winged figure that has become a lasting symbol of West Virginian folklore. The festival kicks off Saturday and continues through Sunday, offering a packed schedule for all ages.
Festival- goers can enjoy a variety of activities, including over 100 vendors, the Mothman museum, the statue, escape rooms, Mothman-themed black light mini golf, and much more.
Chris Rizer, Main Street Director says, ” It’s just a fantastic time, really.”
The Mothman festival has become a sensation and Rizer said that it’s because of the story surrounding the legend.
“Everyone has a lot of fun with it, and I think it’s one of those things that Point Pleasant really loves about itself,” Rizer said. “Everybody here has that story of going out hunting for the Mothman at night and everyone in my generation remembers coming to the first Mothman Festival when the statue was dedicated and John Keel was here, who wrote the Mothman Prophecies, and of course, it just gets bigger every year”
This festival is more than just a weekend celebration; it’s a tradition that brings together generations of Mothman enthusiast, first-time visitors, fans around the globe and attracts media attention every year. This year the event is set to have 20-25 thousand people Rizer said.
The festival has grown into one of the region’s most popular events, offering a weekend of entertainment, local culture, and a chance to experience the town that birthed the Mothman legend.
