CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A man charged with double murder in Kanawha County is getting reassigned a new public defense attorney.

Markus Guy, 32, of Charleston charged with murdering his girlfriend’s mother and brother in February came before Kanawha County Circuit Judge Maryclaire Akers Monday to request a new attorney to handle his case.

Judge Akers accepted Guy’s request for a new attorney, who was previously Kanawha County Public Defender Zoe Shavers. She then appointed him to Defense Attorney Ed Bowman, but first not without some questions as to why he no longer wanted Shavers on his council.

“Mr. Guy, I’m not sure you know what I know and I’m sure you probably don’t, but the public defenders office in Kanawha County has some of the finest criminal defense attorneys available, Mrs. Shavers sitting next to you is one of them,” Akers said.

Guy said his reasoning was that he was dissatisfied with the work that was being done into his case and the discovery process was taking too long. He said he wasn’t sure if he wanted another defense attorney to handle it if it would continue to be this way.

“If I’m calling and trying to get someone to see me and come talk to me and nobody’s coming, I’ve had my discovery ready for over a month and nobody came to talk to me about my discovery or go over what we’re going to do for trial, if it’s going to be like that than no, I don’t want nobody,” said Guy.

Akers said appointing Guy a new attorney may cause the process to take even longer.

“Mr. Guy, this may cause a delay in your trial and I feel like I need you to understand that before we proceed, it’s set in December which you know, it’s September now,” Akers said.

Guy’s trial has been originally set for Dec. 2. It’s now yet to be determined as to whether this will delay it or not.

Guy pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder before Judge Akers in August.

He allegedly killed Alisha Carnefix, 39, and Koda Jarrett, 14, in their St. Albans home on Feb. 7. After Guy and his girlfriend, Shelby Frazier reported their deaths, deputies found the bodies which showed to have been shot multiple times.

Guy remains in the South Central Regional Jail without bail.
