CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Kanawha County Prosecuting Attorney’s office is paring with local law enforcement agencies to take a closer look into the series of ongoing threats made against Kanawha County Schools.

According to the Prosecuting Attorney’s office, a number of people have contacted them expressing their concerns about the safety of the schools.

This comes after there have been multiple threats or hoaxes being made, including active shooter threats against George Washington and South Charleston High Schools. Police are now investigating those schools out of an abundance of caution.

The office says that such threats or hoaxes are felony crimes that could result in a maximum prison sentence of 1-3 years and/or a $5,000 to $25,000 dollar fine regardless of the intent or ability to follow through with the threats.

“There is nothing we take more seriously than the safety of our children,” said Prosecuting Attorney Debra Rusnak. “The cases are being thoroughly investigated and will be vigorously prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
