CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Bogey’s BBQ is officially firing up the grill at Charleston’s Capitol Market.
Around 50 or more market-goers gathered in for a ribbon-cutting ceremony of Bogey’s to celebrate the grand opening of its now second location.
Bogey’s Co-owner Jay Nelson said it’s an honor to expand and to lay down some of their roots within the Capitol Market.
“It’s unbelievable, it’s something we’ve been working on for a long time, so we’re really looking forward to the opportunity, it’s been a pretty long road but we’re ready to keep going,” Nelson said.
Originally being located in Tornado, WV, Co-owner Andrew Ford said the menu at Capitol Market will feature some of their popular and classic items that everyone enjoys at its Tornado location, such as their award-winning grilled beef hot dog.
The menu also features specialty sandwiches from wood-smoked pulled pork BBQ, to smoked turkey and tri-tip, as well as signature sides.
Ford said everything on the menu is unique and fresh.
“We’re bringing a homemade menu, everything from our sauce to our fire roasted corn to our shrimp taco sauce, we make everything from scratch,” Ford said.
Other new menu items include the West By Cod beer-battered fish sandwich with homemade tartar sauce, a pork belly BLT and the Dirty Birdie, a hand-breaded half-smoked chicken sandwich.
The restaurant will also offer draft beers, cocktails, daily specials and catering options.
Nelson said coming to the market has opened them up to another community and a new demographic.
“We’ve wanted to move this way for a long time and thought that originally we were going to build a barbeque trailer and take our food places to get people to come to us, and as it turns out people were more than happy to make the drive to Tornado, so I figure they will be a lot more than happy to make the drive here,” said Nelson.
Ford adds that they are happy to be in a central Charleston hub that the Capitol Market provides.
“Capitol Market is just an awesome place for Charleston, it’s a community place, everybody comes for family events, reunions, there’s a lot of events here, and it’s just the best of Charleston right here at the Capitol Market,” said Ford.
Charleston Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin was one of the dignitaries that came out to the market Thursday to help welcome Bogey’s to the area. She said owning and operating a local business is hard work and it’s great when people can come together to support them and honor that hard work.
“We’re here on ribbon cuttings, we’re here on grand openings, but you know what small businesses is all about, I grew up in a back store room of a small business, it’s nights, it’s weekends, it’s holidays, it’s when nobody is around that they do the heavy lifting,” Goodwin said. “It’s amazing to see how many people came up today, to show up today for them.”
Bogey’s moved into the vacant space of the former Fresh Seafood Company after it closed its operations last fall.
Capitol Market Executive Director Evan Osborn said this marks the market’s first new tenant to come in nearly a decade.
“I think today’s the culmination of a lot of hard work, a lot of perseverance, not just from our market community, our board of directors, but really the community as a whole,” he said.
Osborn said the board met with around 50 different applicants that were interested in leasing the space. However, he said they made the right decision in choosing Bogey’s to be the new occupant of that space.
“Of all of the things you can’t quantify or ask for, the thing that we didn’t know but have come to realize is just what great people Andrew and Jay are and they want to give back, they want to serve,” Osborn said.
Bogey’s is now open at Capitol Market from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
