CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Kanawha County is making its seasonal effort to clean up the area with the Fall Clean-Up.
The Fall Clean-Up is a series of three dates where Kanawha County residents can bring their trash or items they have no use for.
The first of three fall clean-ups will be on Saturday, September 7, at the site of the old Herbert High School in Elkview. The clean-up will last from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Kanawha County Commission President Lance Wheeler says this is a valuable service.
“This is a service that we’re able to provide. It’s something that people really enjoy,” Wheeler said on “580 Live” with Dave Allen Thursday. “Not only is it something that helps out some of our citizens here in Kanawha County in getting cleaned up, it also prevents trash from being on the side of the road, it prevents tires from being in the river, and that’s something, environmentally, we don’t want.”
Wheeler says this a free event and people will be there to assist you.
“This event is free for everyone, there’s no charge,” Wheeler said. “You just come in, no matter where you live in Kanawha County, you pull up, we’ll get you designated in the right location, we’ll unload your truck or your trailer, and then we’ll get it all cleaned up.”
Wheeler says most anything can be brought, but there are a few items that citizens can’t unload.
“Chemicals, hazardous wastes, oils, paints, things like that, those you can’t take,” Wheeler said. “If you want to bring a refrigerator, you want to bring scrap metal, you want to bring bags of trash, tires, we work with the West Virginia DEP and REAP program to where we can actually recycle these tires.”
Residents have been known to use this clean-up as an opportunity to dispose of multiple loads of unwanted items or trash, and Wheeler says people can come as many times as they’d like.
“There’s not a limit to how many times you can come in a day,” Wheeler said. “We’ve got some people who will come three, four times throughout the day, just making those rounds, getting things cleaned up. I think that’s an excellent way to help clean up the county and I think this is an excellent service, and it’s something that’s very popular.”
Kanawha County citizens will have more than just this upcoming Saturday to dispose of their unwanted items in the fall, as the county will host two other clean ups this season. The second clean-up will be on September 21 at the intersection of C Street and 4th Avenue in South Charleston and the third clean-up will be on October 5 behind Go-Mart in Cabin Creek.
