CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A well-known Charleston businessman has died.

Mike Green, the longtime manager of Green’s Feed and Seed, died early Wednesday morning at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

Green was the son of Earl Green, the founder of the store. Mike worked there from childhood until he retired a few years ago but people still associated him with the business.

“He was a great retailer and he served the public. He truly did. He would find a way to take care of your needs,” said Joe Greenwood a former employee of Green’s and a longtime friend of the family.

Green’s father took over the store from Altman’s in the 1960s and according to Greenwood, Mike grew up around the business.

“He probably started working when he was 12 or so. When he got big enough to carry feed, he loaded cars. He was the one who brought Green’s into the computer age. I was working there when he put the first computer in. He was a retail genius,” Greenwood said.

Greenwood added, Mike was always keenly aware of the products the public wanted and strived to offer great customer service.

“Everybody loved Mike. If you asked for something and they didn’t have it, he said he’d have it there in at least three days,” said Greenwood.

Green’s death came four days short of his 71st birthday. Funeral arrangements are not yet known.
