SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — South Charleston is wrapping up the summer with the 20th annual Summerfest this week.
Summerfest is a yearly festival around the Mound in South Charleston that features concerts, over 20 vendors, carnival rides and a kid’s zone with inflatables and face painting.
The festival kicked off on Wednesday and will last through Saturday, August 17. Festivities begin at 6 p.m. each night.
Shawn Zuniga, marketing director for the City of South Charleston, says this event is the right way to end the summer.
“I think it’s one of those events, it’s nice to have at the end of the summertime,” Zuniga said on “580 Live” with Dave Allen. “It’s a special event.
Summerfest will offer two bands each night for live music. Thursday will feature The Danley Band followed by The Legacy Motown Revue. Friday will be The Velvet Brothers followed by 7 Bridges, and Saturday will close the festival with Non Friction followed by The Rick K. Road Trip.
While there are talented and entertaining artists to pay attention to, Zuniga says the time in between acts is just as lively.
“In between bands every day, there’s a dance contest,” Zuniga said. “We’ll start it out with the kids and then we’ll bring the adults in.”
Zuniga also alluded to another form of entertainment coming on Friday night. Zuniga says a drone show will be featured at Summerfest for the first time, and they’re excited about it.
“We are very excited for this,” Zuniga said. “We’re excited for the public to come out and see it. It will be Friday at 10 p.m., and it will be a 15-minute show with music.”
Zuniga says this festival is an opportunity to get people from neighboring counties to South Charleston.
“We want them to come out and see what South Charleston is about,” Zuniga said.
Summerfest will be close with a firework show at 10 o’clock Saturday night.
