KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. — Schools in Kanawha County could soon see the installation of new turf on their baseball and softball fields before the spring 2025 seasons roll around.

The Kanawha County Board of Education met Monday evening and approved the contract for turf fields through FieldTurf. The total of the turfing across the county is $31,029,711.32.

Kanawha County Schools Facilites Director Andrew Crawford says a few high schools in the area will get the new fields soon.

“Three high schools we’re looking at are Capital, Herbert Hoover, and GW,” Crawford said.

Crawford said a pair of those fields will have work started on them in the fall.

“The first two schools we’re looking to start are Capital High School and Herbert Hoover High School,” Crawford said. “We’re looking to start that this fall, late September or early October. We’ll have those done before the weather turns bad, so they’ll be able to play on the new turf fields in the spring.”

Board member Jim Crawford says the county’s athletic fields are going to be top notch.

“They way we have been able to get this in the excess levy, our athletic and extracurricular activity fields are really going to be top notch and probably the best in the state,” Crawford said.

Andrew Crawford added that the work on George Washington High School’s fields would likely not get work done on it until June.

This comes after 10 city owned fields had turf installed over the last two years.
