HAMLIN, W.Va. — A Lincoln County grand jury will take up charges against a couple in connection with their two-year-old daughter’s drowning death.

Felony child neglect charges are moving forward after Jack Parsons, 30, and Tara Adkins, 24, appeared for preliminary hearings Thursday afternoon in Hamlin.

They are charged with child neglect resulting in death and child neglect resulting in serious bodily injury. Both their two-year-old daughter and three-year-old son were found in a farm pond on June 19. The girl died and the boy was hospitalized.

Parsons waived his preliminary hearing Thursday but there was testimony in Adkins’ hearing.

Two state police troopers testified that Adkins didn’t know where her young children were. Parsons originally told authorities he was doing yard work and thought the children were inside the house.

The two children were found in the pond across from their home near Scary Creek Road near Hamlin

Parsons and Adkins remain in jail on $100,000 bail each. The next meeting of the grand jury in Lincoln County is in September.
