After a month long postponement, BridgeFest set for Tuesday night

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — After being delayed because of the June 24th tornadoes in the City of Charleston, BridgeFest is a go for this Tuesday night at Bridge Road Shops located in South Hills.

BridgeFest, a community festival with music, dancing, food and arts and crafts from the Bridge Road Neighborhood Association, runs from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Emilie Couch, president of the association, said this is a fundraising event for the beautification of the neighborhood.

“We use the funding to put flower baskets up, on our holiday decorations and to really just beautify the entire neighborhood,” she said.

Originally, BridgeFest was scheduled as a FestivALL event for Tuesday, June 25th.

However, it was postponed as city crews concentrated on cleaning up immediately after the storms. Couch said the decision was also made because the area did not have power.

The National Weather Service has confirmed an EF1 tornado traveled 11 miles from south of Charleston into South Hills on the evening of June 24, 2019.  A separate EF-0 tornado covered less than a mile near Charleston’s Yeager Airport.

Trees were downed along with power lines throughout South Hills and, at one point, busy Bridge Road was closed to traffic due to piles of tree branches and power lines.

Couch said even with the month-long postponement and it not being part of FestivALL, there is still excitement in the air.

“Everybody has been calling. They want to know when it was being rescheduled,” Couch said.

“I think it is going to be a great event and I do not think this is going to affect the attendance at all.”
